Why Amtryke for Therapists
Amtryke gives therapists powerful options to help riders succeed.
Why Amtryke?
Therapists at the Center
- Multiple propulsion methods including hand, foot, and hand & foot trykes
- Various sizes and adaptive accessories
- Customized to ensure rider safety and success
Therapists (PT/OT) perform personalized assessments to select the right tryke for each individual. The AMBUCS Resource Center offers support to meet the specific needs of each rider. National AMBUCS provides therapist training to improve safety and accessibility in adaptive cycling. Amtryke was inspired by a physical therapist in the early 1990s, and therapists remain essential today. They assess and fit riders for Amtrykes nationwide, helping make adaptive cycling accessible.
How to Choose an Amtryke
Use this simple guide to match each rider with the right Amtryke.
Step 1
Assess the Rider
Review mobility, strength, range of motion, balance, and goals for riding.
Measuring Tips
For the arm measurement, measure from A: just distal to the acromion to the B: lateral epicondyle to the C: metacarpal phalangeal (MCP) joints.
The leg measurement is on the outside of the leg (not the inseam), from the D: greater trochanter to the E: knee joint line to the F: floor—with the shoe on. Measure with the shoes/AFOs that the rider will wear when riding.
Measure both arms and also both legs; there may be a difference. If there is, use the shorter measurement. If there is a great deal of difference, call for adaptive accessory advice at 800-838-1845 x117.
Step 2
Select the Tryke
Choose the frame size, propulsion method (hand, foot, or hand & foot), and adaptive accessories that support safety and independence.
Step 3
Fit and Adjust
Fine-tune seating, pedals, supports, and straps to ensure comfort, proper alignment, and safe control.
